The world's first Snoopy Museum opened in Tokyo
The world's first museum dedicated to cartoon beagle. And it's open this weekend.
Located in Tokyo's Roppongi, the museum features original and unpublished works from memorable author Charles M. Schulz, as well as new, rotating exhibits. The only other Peanuts Museum is the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa, California.
The current exhibition is titled "My Favorite Peanuts" and has sixty comics chosen by Jean Schulz, the artist's wife, and she includes the stories behind each section.
So why is there a Snoopy museum in Japan? In the 1970s, Snoopy became popular with young Japanese, and the character began to appear on pockets. The Japanese may not read manga, but prefer the character's designs and shapes.
Even today, it is not uncommon to find someone who loves Snoopy but does not really read manga or watch cartoons. (This is probably the reason why many Japanese think Peanuts is about Snoopy, rather than the character being part of an unfortunate Charlie Brown cast.)
If you are interested in visiting the Snoopy Tokyo Museum, it will open this Saturday on April 23. The official website here is in English and it contains directions and ticket information.

Somewhere in my magazine box we have a Newtype (Japan) issue highlighting Snoopy's 40th anniversary, written by singer / seiyuu Hayashibara Megumi (Ranma-chan, Ayanami Rei, Lina Inverse, Faye Valentine, etc.). She is clearly a huge fan of the character. She also voiced Marcie in one of the Japanese specials.
