The world of the Vikings

A chilly drizzle made us shudder, but still filled with excitement as we waited for the Vikings to show up. It is a January night in the town of Shetland, Lerwick (Scotland).

Next to me, a man and two small children were grinning at the back of the town hall, a cloud of red smoke. "Looks like they burned the whole building," he shouted in excitement.

After all, fire is the reason we're here. This is Up Helly Aa, the Viking memorial festival in Shetland. Like everyone else, I came here to admire the sight of a Viking warship being burned.

About 1,200 years ago, the first Vikings descended north of mainland Scotland, crushing local resistance to take land. Norwegian lords ruled Shetland for almost seven centuries before mortgaging these islands to the king of Scotland.

Today, the Norwegians' Norn dialect is forgotten in Shetland, but the islanders are still proud of their Viking origins. Each year, they eagerly prepare a replica of a Viking boat for the Up Helly Aa Festival.

Now, when the crowd sang traditional songs about kings of the sea and dragon boats, torch bearers pulled the boat into a field. When the Viking leader gave the signal, a rain of torches set the boat on fire.

The fire spread to the mast, embers soared into the night sky. On the sidewalk, the children stomped their feet, dancing in excitement.

Though centuries past, images of the Viking warriors and their boats still live in the fantasy worlds of filmmakers, novelists and comic book authors.

Today, we can easily search for stories about Vikings in this fantasy world - how they fight and celebrate, where they live and how they die. But what do we really know about the Vikings? Who are they, how do they view the world, and what is their life like?

Now, with cutting-edge technology - from satellite imagery to DNA research and isotope analysis - archaeologists and scientists have come up with surprisingly new answers.

In Estonia, scientists have unearthed two buried boats filled with killed Viking warriors, thus finding the answer to the Viking's violent origins.

In Sweden, researchers are analyzing the skeleton of a Viking female general, to shed light on the role of women in war. And in Russia, archaeologists and historians are tracing routes the Viking merchants took to trade in slaves, and clarifying the importance of slavery to the Viking economy.

For archaeologists, the door is starting to open up to a new `` world '' - far more complex and intriguing than it might have been. "This is a pivotal moment to study the Vikings," said Jimmy Moncrieff, a historian at the Shetland Amenity Trust in Lerwick.

Taken together, new studies reveal a new picture of these bold crew's cultural ambitions and influences.
