More About The A10 Warthog
According to Iraqi prisoners, the black A-10 Warthog was the only visibly most feared aircraft at low altitude during the Gulf War. The A-10 is a two-engine jet featuring a 30 mm chain gun mounted on the chin, a precision weapon delivery platform deployed in battle.
"If you can see the armored vehicle, you can destroy it," said William Martell of the Naval College in Newport, RI.
Officially named Thunderbolt II, the first production of the A-10 took place in October 1975. More recently, it has proved its worth in military operations at the Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. Famous for harsh conditions.
Dual engine aircraft are specially designed to provide air support to ground forces and can engage in extensive combat and carry large cargo.
The 30mm cannon can fire 3,900 shells per minute and shoot down various ground targets, including tanks. All A-10 glass is bulletproof and titanium armor protects both the pilot and critical areas of the flight control system.
During the Gulf War, the A-10 made 8,100 sorties and seldom landed due to maintenance issues and poor flight conditions. The 1999 equipment upgrade provided the aircraft with a global positioning system.
The A-10 is designed to withstand even the most catastrophic damage and land on improvised runways or anywhere to complete missions.
Its simple design and rugged airframe allow it to operate beyond the rugged desert gas bands.
